About Sophia:
Submission Instructions for Authors and Publishers

The Editors welcome original contributions of c. 5000–8000 words (essay, article, paper, critical notice or reply) and discussion or review essays (1000–2000 words), or booknotes (c. 500–800 words). Books/media for review are also received.* Manuscripts should be provided in double-spaced hard-copy (A4 or US legal paper), in clear print. An abstract of c. 100 words must be provided. With a covering letter to the Editors, send an original copy with name(s), institutional affiliation and full address (with e-mail if possible), plus two copies bearing only the essay title. This latter is for ‘blind’ review purposes; no name(s) of author should appear on the opening page, last page or in page headers. In endnotes avoid self-referenced citations such as: ‘See my book, Just War?’. Upon advice of acceptance, authors should, with any corrections or revisions suggested by the Editors, provide the final manuscript on disk or CD-media, conforming to the format specified in the style guidelines below, and preferably formatted using Microsoft Word or generic .rtf (Mac or IBM/PC). To minimize errors, disks should be clearly labelled with the author’s name, file name, format (indicate Mac or PC, Word version), then placed in a protective cover prior to mailing. Attachment copies in the same format (or .rtf file) may also be sent via
e-mail. Failure to follow house style requirements, provide disk or electronic copy, an abstract and institutional affiliation details may delay review process, publication schedule and citation.

All submitted manuscripts are independently refereed by readers recommended by the Editors in consultation with the International Advisory Panel. Anonymity is assured. Decisions to publish or not, to request revisions, if necessary re-submission, and/or extra adjudication, are entirely at the discretion of the Editors. Formal acknowledgement may take up to one month, full consideration may take up to six months. A paper may not be submitted to another journal for simultaneous consideration. Copyright of published material is retained by Ashgate Publishing Limited. Express permission of the publisher is necessary for reproducing part or whole of the text, in print or electronic media (fees apply). Due acknowledgement of source and authorship where applicable, and copyright clearance of cited matter in the articles are the express responsibility of the authors. The Editorial Board and the publishers accept no responsibility for any lapses or infringements.
