Melbourne Philosophical Community
The School of Philosophy of the University of Melbourne is part of a thriving philosophical community. Much of this is generated by the School itself. There are regular general research seminars by visiting speakers and locals. Seminars of a more specialized nature are run by the various research groups in the School, such as the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics, the Logic Group, and the History and Philosophy of Science Group. Philosophy Postgraduate students also run their own research seminar weekly. The Melbourne School of Continental Philosophy puts on frequent short courses.
Regular research seminars are also run by the other departments of Philosophy in Melbourne: Monash University, La Trobe University, the Australian Catholic University. Philosophers are very welcome to attend these. The Australasian Association of Philosophy runs an annual philosophy conference, which is in Melbourne fairly regularly. And there are frequent smaller weekend conferences and workshops on Applied Ethics, Logic, and Continental Philosophy, and various other topics.
